Ruther Glen, Virginia resident Kevin Johnson, 53, was driving the truck that lost control and struck the Peterbilt crane being operated by 61-year-old James Hutson, of Ephrata, Pennsylvania, officials say.
Shortly after 2 p.m. on Oct. 23, Maryland State Police troopers were called to the northbound lanes of the interstate in Sparks Glencoe when the pick-up hauling a trailer was heading southbound on I-83 when for unknown reasons, Johnson lost control, crossed over into the northbound lanes, hit two vehicles, and struck the mobile crane.
Both the truck and crane went up in flames and the initial incident caused three other vehicles to crash.
Johnson and Hutson were both pronounced dead at the scene. Four others were taken by paramedics to WellSpan York Hospital in Pennsylvania for treatment of undisclosed injuries.
Following the crash, all northbound lanes on I-83 remained closed for more than five hours during the investigation and cleanup.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
